Notes:
This song is about a person who has lost someone beloved. But he has not quite accepted this fact, despite the evidence. He is delusional. Since he’s not yet ready to let her go, he is keeping the body (or he keeps visiting the body where ever it is)! I’m not really sure how long this goes on but…. (^_^)
In the middle of the song, during the bridge, I think he suddenly starts crying. He realizes that all this love he is pouring out, it’s not being received. And she is never going to be able to return that love because… well, SHE”S DEAD. It’s like his “wake up call.”
After that, the regular chorus is sung 1 more time; I think this is our hero trying to ignore the “wake up call” he just had; but he fails. The last chorus is reality setting in: the body is decaying, his suppressed feelings come out, and he accepts that it’s time to finally say farewell.

Translation notes:
1. 故(yue) in this song means “because of” BUT it can also be used to refer to someone who is dead, as in “my late husband” What a fun play on words??

2. 息を沈め(iki o shizume) literally means submerging/sinking the breath; but it’s a literary metaphor for “taking a deep breath” and “trying to stay calm.”

3. 供膳(kuzen) is a traditional first meal shared by a newly wedded couple. I don’t know if newlyweds still do this or not.

4. 息は沈み(iki wa shizumi) is very similar to #2 but with an important difference. In #2, the man is the subject; he controls the breath. But in #4, the breath is the subject, which seems to indicate that the man is NO LONGER in control, not able to stay calm and collected.

5. 軋み化け(kishimibake) = 軋む＋化ける; kishimu is the sound effect of a creaky, old wood floor and bakeru means to transform or to morph, usually associated with ghosts. So…a transformation with a sound effect?

6. 毒を嘆く(doku o nageku) means “I mourn the poison.” To me, when I put #5 and #6 together, I get the feeling that our hero becomes so wrought with emotion that he turns into a wailing banshee…well, not literally but figuratively. Hmmm, either that or the ghost of the deceased shows up.

7. 片付ける(katadzukeru) means to dispose, to clean up, or to wrap up a situation. I felt that “lay to rest” was a good way to convey the same idea, but for a dead body. Although in Japan, the person would most likely be cremated, not buried.
